30 Days of Giveaways ~ Day 22

Hope everyone had a great weekend! We participated in a fundraiser walk for some friends of our adopting from Ethiopia, watched Captain America, and did some much-needed straightening up around here. =) Two of those activities were much more fun than the other, LOL.

As a reminder, here's this week's bonus prize, in addition to a daily copy of Ring of Secrets! And if you haven't watched my new video book trailer yet for Whispers from the Shadows, I added that to my left sidebar. It's so much fun!

Now onward we go. =)

Word of the Week . . . Calm

Did you know that calm is related to heat? I sure didn't! But our word calm comes from Old Spanish and Portugese calma, which meant "the heat of the day." The time of day when everything came to stand-still, when work stopped so animals and people alike could find some shade and take a siesta. ;-) The Spanish in turn came from the Latin cauma, meaning "burning heat."

So if your July is anything like mine, it's been full of cauma to be sure--so a fine time to seek out some shade (or a pool) and enjoy some quiet and calm.

Your question of the day:

Which is your favorite season and why?

Mine is spring--love the new life, that brilliant green of fresh growth, and the moderate temperatures. Fall's a close second...but it ends in winter, which is my least favorite, so... (And yet, yes, I named a character Winter, and I adore her. What can I say? LOL)

  1. Hi Roseanna! My favorite season is your least, I'm afraid. I love winter. I wish it were colder in Texas, though. The reason? I love sweaters and hoodies and curling up with a blanket and a book. Oh, and snow... which I don't get the chance to see enough of.

    Blessings,
    Andrea

    1. I think I'll like winter much better when I move to a better-insulated house here in a few weeks, LOL. Our old place is so drafty it's nearly impossible to keep it above 60 degrees in the winter. I loved it as a kid. =)

  2. The only hobby I have right now is collecting books. Would love to win your book. By the way I'm not getting very far with this Rafflecoptor. At one point got my score up to 17 and since has just been showing 13 each time I start, and tonight it started me with only 10. ????

    1. Maxie, it's just because it starts the tally anew every day, but some options aren't open every day. So it will remember some for you (showing you you already did those for this week), and others you have to click again.

  3. My favorite season is Fall. I love walking through the leaves and listening to them crunch under my feet; wearing my light linen jackets; seeing all of the colors on the hillsides; the crisp air; good time for walking outdoors; lighting our woodstove to take the chill off ~ must mention s'mores; and best of all? The chiggers that love me and wait anticipating, "Here she comes, here she comes." are gone! Kathleen ~ Lane Hill House

  4. Fall may be my favorite season (love cool, crisp, mornings & fall colors, hot chocolate, pumpkins, bonfires & fireplaces, hayrides,& Thanksgiving) - spring is a close second. But, I actually am glad that I live in an area that experiences all 4 seasons, as I love the beach & the snow - just wish summer wasn't quite so hot & winter quite so cold.

  5. I do like Autumn. The heat of Summer has passed and Winter is still months away.

    It's a pretty season too.

  6. That's so interesting about 'calm'. I find etymology fascinating. :D
I like autumn best, I think. Partially because it’s nice and cool, and partially because it means six months of cool weather!! I live in Texas, though, so the weather’s probably a lot nicer than most of the rest of y’all. :D I think our favorite seasons might change depending on where we live. Like if we lived in NY or ND, we might like the warmer seasons, while if the same person lived in Tx. or NM, they might like the cooler seasons. Just a thought. :D

  7. My favorite season is summer. I love the warmer weather and having more time to read and write. I love getting the chance to go to the beach or the pool and curl up with a good book. And of course, I love getting a break from school!

  8. Who would have guessed that meaning of the word? Thanks for sharing!

My favorite season is autumn. I love the leaves, the colors, the crisp air, the crunching leaves, the weather, the clothes, the mood - I enjoy pretty much everything about it.

  9. Since I live in Florida, I'd have to say winter because it's still warm but usually not too hot, although I do miss snow at Christmas time.

  10. Definitely spring is my favorite season for much the same reasons as you stated. I love seeing the flowers starting to grow and the trees blooming. cespeary (at) yahoo (dot) com

  11. Usually spring, but this year was the exception since it didn't really happen - 51 inches of snow in April will do that - and thus we had Winter, Still Winter, and currently are on Decidedly Not Winter. So this year autumn may be the favorite, with summer coming in last because we had three days of 90's in a row and my sunburn is extremely painful right now. Welcome to Minnesota!

  12. This is, for me, a VERY hard question. VERY hard. As a native Southern Californian who lives in the Midwest, I didn't know what seasons WERE until I moved to Michigan in my 20s - so I like pretty much all of them (though, like you, winter is generally my least favorite.). Like spring, fall, and summer for different reasons. Hope that's sufficient! LOL

  14. Summer for the weather

  15. My favorite season is probably fall. It gets really, really hot here in the summer, so fall and winter are a nice change- and I love autumn breezes!

  16. Wow. We have the same likes about seasons. Spring is my favorite because I love the flowers and watching the world come alive from winter and second is Autumn, because I love that crisp chill that comes along and the radiant colors of the leaves. :) That's neat about the word, too! I did not know that.

  17. I don't have a favorite season; I love them all.

  18. My favorite season is winter. I love the rain and snow!

  19. Definitely fall! I hate the heat of summer, winter has too much snow, and spring is just wet. Fall has the absolute perfect weather!

  20. Hallo, Hallo Ms. White!

I would lament that my favourite season is spilt between Autumn and Winter because my constitution and countenance are directly affected by the inclement weather of Summer's firey wrath! :( Oy.
